Mrs. Sivakolunthu Kandiah

Mrs. Sivakolunthu Kandiah was one of those who taught during the early days following the registration of Vadamaradchy Hindu Girls’ College in October 1946.   I had been her student in 1947 when I was in J.S.C class. My classmates and I appreciated her efficiency in teaching Elementary Mathematics (Special). She used to reward us with books for our good performances. In the later years she was in charge of the College Home Science section after she graduated in Home science.  She had been very helpful to the then Principal Miss.Y.Kanagasabai who was new to Vadamaradchy particularly in organising grand functions like the Prize Giving and the Founder’s day celebration with the experience she got in Jaffna where she was teaching prior to her appointment to our school.   She was not only an able teacher but a good social worker. She had a vision for our Community. She once unsuccessfully contested the Point Pedro electorate in the general Election under the leadership of the late C. Sundaralingam M.P, She was acclaimed as the Iron women of the Tamils by him.   Despite her advanced age she seemed very lively when she attended two of our Past Pupil’s meetings in Canada. It was a shock to all of us when we were informed of her demise in India on the 26th October. May her soul rest in peace.  Our condolences to her loving daughter and family.
