நேற்று முன்தினம் கனடாவில் காலமான பிரபல எழுத்தாளரும் ஆசிரியருமான கமலா பெரிய தம்பி அவர்களே வட இந்து மகளிர் கல்லூரியின் பாடசாலைக் கீதத்தை எழுதியவர் ஆவார். இது 1954 ஆம் ஆண்டு எழுதப்பட்டது. கமலா பெரியதம்பி வட இந்து மகளிர் பாடசாலையின் முன்னாள் ஆசிரியை ஆவார்.

பருத்தித்துறை தம்பசிட்டி, புலோலி மேற்கைப் பிறப்பிடமாகவும், புலோலி தெற்கு, பல்லப்பையை வதிவிடமாகவும், இந்தியா சென்னையை வசிப்பிடமாகவும் கொண்ட மகேஸ்வரி நல்லதம்பி (பிறப்பு : 7 நவம்பர் 1923 — இறப்பு : 12 யூலை 2011) இறைபதம் எய்தினார்.

Mrs. Sivakolunthu Kandiah

Mrs. Sivakolunthu Kandiah was one of those who taught during the early days following the registration of Vadamaradchy Hindu Girls’ College in October 1946.   I had been her student in 1947 when I was in J.S.C class. My classmates and I appreciated her efficiency in teaching Elementary Mathematics (Special). She used to reward us with books for our good performances. In the later years she was in charge of the College Home Science section after she graduated in Home science.  She had been very helpful to the then Principal Miss.Y.Kanagasabai who was new to Vadamaradchy particularly in organising grand functions like the Prize Giving and the Founder’s day celebration with the experience she got in Jaffna where she was teaching prior to her appointment to our school.   She was not only an able teacher but a good social worker. She had a vision for our Community. She once unsuccessfully contested the Point Pedro electorate in the general Election under the leadership of the late C. Sundaralingam M.P, She was acclaimed as the Iron women of the Tamils by him.   Despite her advanced age she seemed very lively when she attended two of our Past Pupil’s meetings in Canada. It was a shock to all of us when we were informed of her demise in India on the 26^th October. May her soul rest in peace.  Our condolences to her loving daughter and family.

திருமதி. தெய்வானைப்பிள்ளை செல்வராஜா

  இவர் யாழ் தெல்லிப்பளையை சேர்ந்த திரு திருமதி கந்தப்பிள்ளை தம்பதியினருக்கு இரண்டாவது பிள்ளையாக 22 - 11 - 1931 ஆம் ஆண்டு தோன்றினார். இவருக்கு மூன்று சகோதரிகள் உள்ளனர்.

      இவர் தனது விடா முயற்சியினாலும் அயராத உழைப்பினாலும், கல்வியின் மேல் உள்ள ஆர்வத்தினாலும் கல்வியை திறம்பட கற்று 1953 ம் ஆண்டு ஆசிரியர் கலாசாலையில் தனது பயிற்சியை திறம்பட முடித்து ஒரு தேர்ச்சி பெற்ற ஆசிரியை ஆக வெளியேறினார்.

      இவரது திறமையை அறிந்த வட இந்து மகளிர் கல்லூரி அதிபராக அப்போதிருந்த செல்வி சரவணமுத்து அவர்கள் செல்வி கந்தபிள்ளையை அதே ஆண்டே அக்கல்லூரியில் ஆசிரியையாக நியமித்தார். ஒரு சிறந்த ஆசிரியராகவும் சமயப் பற்றாளராகவும் திகழ்ந்த இவர் கல்வியை மென்மேலும் கற்று லண்டன் கலை பட்டதாரி பட்டமும் பெற்றார்.

       வட இந்து மகளிர் கல்லூரியின் திருமன்றம் விடுதியில் இவர் இருந்த போது அங்கு இருந்த வசதியற்ற மாணவிகளுக்கு அப்பியாசப் பத்தகங்களை வாங்கி கொடுத்தும், பாடங்களை சொல்லிக்கொடுத்தும் பல தன்னாலியன்ற உதவிகளை செய்தார். இவரின் உதவி மனப்பான்மையை கண்டு நான் எனக்குள் வியந்த நாட்கள் பல!

      இவர் உயர்தர பொதுக்கல்விதராதர வகுப்பு மாணவர்களுக்கு தமிழ், இந்து நாகரீகம் ஆகிய பாடங்களை திறம்பட கற்பித்தார். இவரிடம் பல மாணவர்கள் பல்கலைகழகத்துக்கு தெரிவாகி உயர் கல்வி பெற சென்றனர். அங்குள்ள விரிவுரையாளர்கள் மாணவர்களின் அறிவைப்பராட்டி அவர்கள் மூலமாக செல்வி கந்தப்பிள்ளையை அறிந்து அவரின் அறிவுக்கூர்மையையும், கல்வி கல்வி கற்பிக்கும் திறனையும் பாராட்டினர். இவையாவும் அம்மாணவர்கள் மூலம் நாம் அறிந்து கொண்டவை.

     செல்வி கந்தப்பிள்ளையின் மூத்த சகோதரியும் ஒரு ஆசிரியராவார். இவர்கள் இருவரின் உதவியினால் இளைய இரு சகோதரிகளும் முறையே விஞ்ஞான பட்டதாரியாகவும், வைத்தியராகவும் தேர்ச்சிபெற்று சேவையாறறுகின்றனர்.

     செல்வி கந்தப்பிள்ளை அவர்கள் 1967 ம் ஆண்டு யாழ் மூளாயைப் பிறப்பிடமாகக் கொண்ட ஆங்கில ஆசிரியரான திரு செல்வராஜா அவர்களை மணம் புரிந்தார். இவர்களுக்கு நிமலன், றமணி என இரு செல்வங்கள் உள்ளனர். திரு செல்வராஜா அவர்கள் 1983 ம் ஆண்டு சிவபதமடைந்தார்.

       திருமதி செல்வராஜா அவர்கள் 1992 ம் ஆண்டு கல்விச் சேவையிலிருந்து இளைப்பாறினார். பின்பு யாழ் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் பகுதி நேர விரிவுரையாளராக பணியாற்றினார். இவர் 15.12.2006 ஆம் ஆண்டு இவுலகை நீத்து விண்ணுலகை அடைந்தார். இவரின் சேவைகள் காலத்தால் என்றும் அழியாது எல்லோர் மனதிலும் நிலைத்து நிற்கும் என்பது திண்ணம்.

Mrs. Theivanaipillai Selvarajah

மாணவர்களின் கல்வி வளர்ச்சிக்கு அயராது உழைத்த பெருந்தகை

  I am privileged to write a few words in reminiscence of Mrs. Theivanaipillai Selvarajah, affectionately called “Kanadapillai Teacher” by her students. She had been one of those who were instrumental to the growth and success of Vada Hindu Girls College. 

     Though born and bred in Maviddapuram, Tellipalai she became one among us ever since she joined the teaching staff of Vada Hindu Girls’ College in 1953. She was introduced to Vadamaradchy by the late principal Miss. K.Charavanamuthu who recruited very good teachers to work with her towards the uplift of the college.

    Owing to pressing family responsibilities she decided to abandon her studies after passing her Senior school Certificate Examination and join the Government Teachers’ Training College at Kopay. Her excellent work was greatly appreciated by the Principal of the Training College who strongly recommended her to Miss. Charavanamuttu. She became a member of the staff of Vada Hindu Girls’ College on completion of her training in 1953 and continued to serve there till her retirement in 1992.

     She never relinquished her desire for learning even after she started teaching. Devoting her leisure hours to studies she was able to gain admission to the Peradeniya Campus to follow a Diploma Course in Tamil conducted by the University of Peradeniya. There she learnt Pali and Sanskrit besides Tamil which subsequently qualified her to sit for the London degree.

       After resuming her teaching at the end of her study leave, she concentrated on preparing for the London examination as advised by her lecturers at Peradeniya who were highly impressed by her excellence. She came off with flying colours obtaining a first class at the B.A (London) Examination and was recognised as an honours graduate. 

     Eventually she was made the head of the College Tamil society. She taught Tamil and Hindu Civilization two of the Arts subjects for the GCE (Advanced Level) Examination. Most of her students did extremely well at the University entrance examination, and successfully graduated at the University.

      She was one of the teachers who resided in the College hostel during Miss. Charavanamuttu’s period and there after. She was made the hostel warden to be in charge of the general welfare, discipline and studies of the hostel students. She carried out her extra duties so well that she earned the respect of the hostel students, their parents and the hostel employees. She had to leave the hostel and live in a house at Puloly after her marriage in 1967.

    Her husband, Mr. Selvarajah an English teacher was a very amiable and peace loving man. He had been a loving husband and a devoted father. Unfortunately he did not live long. It was very painful to receive the shocking news of his untimely death in 1983. He suffered a heart attack while he was at school in Kurunegelle.

         Mrs. Selvarajah was very much devastated by the loss. It took her months to get over the overwhelming grief. However, time had healed her misery. Her strength of character and her natural affinity to service had helped her to overcome her sorrow and devote her time fully on her adorable children and her faithful students.

         Mrs. Selvarajah had been a role model to the teachers. Most fittingly she was presented the “Best Teacher” award for the Vadamaradchy Circuit by the Department of Education in 1991. As a teacher, she maintained a very good rapport with her students. She never hesitated to help her students and colleagues. Her selfless nature enabled her to place other people’s problems ahead of her own and make sacrifices of her own pleasures for the sake of others. She had helped her younger sisters to pursue their higher studies and secure successful careers for themselves.

         It could be said that she had fulfilled her Life’s mission when she passed away in 2006. Every one that knew her loved her very dearly. But God loved her much more and asked her to return, saying she had achieved far and beyond what was expected and that she had done enough for the world.           

         We extend our deepest sympathies to her dear children Nimalan and Ramani who were very fortunate to have such a noble woman as their mother.

          May She Rest in Peace.

Sivan Arangu (சிவன் அரங்கு) an open air stage was donated by late Dr. Somasuntharampillai to Vada Hindu Girls College. This is one of the many contributions he made to the school in Point Pedro. He lived and served his community till his death.

Vadamaradchy

In Vadamaradchy till the beginning of the 20th century, educational institutions were run by the Christian missions, the two leading schools being Hartley College for boys and Methodist High School for girls. The first Hindu school, the Velautham School for boys was a breakaway section from Hartley College as a protest against the principal caning a Hindu student for applying holy ash on his forehead. As for girls, whose parents wanted an education in Hindu culture, were sent to Ramanathan College in Chunnagam. Two such parents were the chief founders of Vada Hindu-Dr. C. Sabhapati and Mr. M. Karthigesu, principal of Kokkuvil Hindu College. This pair when they retired from service got together and sowed seeds for a Hindu College of girls’ at Vadamaradchy. They went round canvassing for this long felt need and all the leading lawyers, teachers and parents railed around them and the Vadamaradchy Educational Society was formed. Chief among them was the then eminent lawyer Mr. M. Esurupadham, Mr. M. A Thangarajah, Mr. K. Somasundharam B.A., Mr. N. A. Rajaratnam, Mr. V.T.S. Sivagurunathan, Mr. Sivapathasundharam, Mr. N.A Nadarajasundharam, Mr. A. Sivakolunthu, Mr. A.Velupillai and others. The end result of the selfless service rendered by these founders is the present Vada Hindu Girls College excelling gin all fields of education. This year our school is 65 years young with a student strength of 1500 and a teaching staff of about 55. The school today is one of the leading schools in Jaffna and our students compete in all island competitions such as Tamil and English oratoricals and sports. Many students entered and are entering the portals of the Sri Lankan University in arts, science, law, medicine and engineering and are occupying high posts not only in Sri Lanka but all over the globe.



Mr. M. Karthigesu DR. C. Sabapathy

The Pioneer father of VHGC One of the Chief Founders

It was in the year 1944 and I was 12 years in form 7 at Ramanathan College. When I came for the April holidays I was told by my uncles Mr. M Karthigesu and Dr. Sabhapati that a Hindu school for girls will be formally started that year on an auspicious day and that by next year I should join it. Meetings were held by the members who formed the Hindu society almost daily and hectic decisions were taken- the fundraising, the site for the school, the staff for the school, the students, the classrooms, etc. Volunteers were in plenty but hard cash was a problem. Dr. Sabhapati opened the list with Rs.1001/-. Many government servants opted to pay a month’s salary. Mr. M. A. Thangarajah donated the land, Mr. S. S. Saravanamuthu offered top to put up a big hall. Malaysian pensioners offered to put up an office and some classrooms. Unfortunately Dr. Sabhapati passed away in April 1945 and his daughter Mrs. A. Navaratnarajah put up a Science lab in his memory. A hostel for girls was donated by Mr. Ponniah in memory of his son Thirunavukkarasu. Now this has been converted into a full fledged library, and recently Mr. A Somasundarampillai has put up an open air stage for the benefit of the students. Dr. Thanabalasundaraam and his children have offered their home to form a home for the needy children.

On the 15th of January 1945 more than 100 students were admitted in 2 codjan sheds, one for the primary school and the other for the junior section. Mrs. Ponuduari was the first principal and there were about 8 volunteer teachers. Classes began with the assembly of students. Thevaram was sung and a small talk on relevant topics was given by one of the teachers was a regular feature. I was in the top class J.S.C along with 10 others. We had the best teachers- V.T.S Sivagurunathan retired principal of Ananda College for Maths, Mr. M. Karthigesu for English a first class Tamil trained teacher Pooranam acca for Tamil, Ms. Chandrathilakam Arumugam for Botany, Ms. Savithiri Karthigesu for Religion and Music, and Ms, Maheswari Arunasalam for history. We were as it were spoon fed and all of us came out with flying colours in the J.S.C. examination, held by the N.P.T.A. that year1945 December.

The next 2 years, time flew. Many additional teachers and a few more hundred students joined, concrete buildings for classes also sprang up. Our SSC results was hundred percent, with Ganeshwary leading in getting an exemption from the London Matriculation and Suntharanayaky and I were 2nd and 3rd being referred in English and Maths respectively but we did complete and both got the exemption. The staff and students and the management were very happy and this paved the way for the school to upgraded.

Step by step the school developed under the able guidance and stewardship of the manager Mr. M. Eswarapatham, a founder member. The school became an A grade school and Veda Hindu excelled in all spheres-education, sports, music, dance, religious and other extra curricular activities. Our students are now participating in island wide competitions and are proud to say that they have won laurels. Due to the valuable and the sacred foresighted work of the founder members Vadamarachy Hindu college is today one of the leading colleges in Jaffna. I will be failing in my attempt if I do not mention in this juncture the yeoman and dedicated service by the various principals and members of the staff who infact made it a reality. I also wish to stress the noble work of the old students who remember their almamater with fond love, and gratitude and are carrying aloft the flag of Vada Hindu by forming Old Girls’ Associations in the home town, Colombo, and in various foreign lands they have settled in, be it-England, Australia or Canada. There is much enthusiasm among them and they work incessantly send contributions in cash and kind to make the students in Vadamarachy.
